Recommendations for the Texas Sunset Commission

To engage in the current Texas Sunset review process, the PN-3 Collaborative convened a broader coalition of partners with expertise in child health, family support, economic stability, and early childhood development. Experts participating in this workgroup represent the collaborative recommendations of  AVANCE, CHILDREN AT RISK, Every Texan, Feeding Texas, Texans Care for Children, the Texas Pediatric Society, TexProtects, and United Ways of Texas. Together, these organizations are working to ensure the diverse needs of families are represented during this uniquely impactful review of Texas state agencies & policy.

Every 12 years, the Texas Sunset Commission reviews state agencies to evaluate whether they remain efficient, effective, and responsive to community needs. This cycle the Sunset review includes several agencies that play a significant role in supporting children and families, including the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Through the Sunset review process, public input helps shape recommendations that are ultimately provided to the Texas Legislature in the form of Sunset Bills. These bills can result in agency reforms, restructuring, consolidation, or other changes designed to improve how state systems can effectively and efficiently serve Texans.

As part of this process, three key policy strategies were identified for the Texas Sunset Commission to consider ahead of the 90th Texas Legislature, with the goal of strengthening systems that support young children and their families across Texas.
